Silver shot for archer

A DUMFRIES paralympian picked up a silver medal for archery at the European Para Championships at the weekend.

Nathan Macqueen, 27, was competing at the event in Berlin with his shooting partner Jessica Stretton And the duo took the mixed pairs by storm, eventually coming up against the Slovakian team in the finals. They finished all square at 150 points each, but as the opposing team had more bullseye shots, they took the win.

Nathan’s mother Rita said: “He loves it, he really does. “This time next year they will be picking the team for the Tokyo Paralympics. He is hopeful, everybody is hopeful, but he can just try his best.”

Nathan was involved in archery as a child and only started to get into it seriously four years ago after suffering setbacks in other sports and being convinced by his wife to give it another try. After a motorcycle accident at the age of 18, the former St Joseph’s College pupil was left paralysed from the waist down putting an end to a prospective career in rugby, having been a player for Glasgow Warriors West.
