Stage six of this year’s event passes through Cumbria and part of the route incorporates the pioneering road surface made by Waterbeck based firm MacRebur.
Among those who will pass along the 272 metre ‘plastic’ stretch between Cockermouth and Whinlatter will be Tour de France winners Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome.
Meanwhile, MacRebur have also sponsored a sprint section, which will take place at Broughton Moor tomorrow afternoon and has been named The MacRebur Prime. The company’s business development manager David Wykes said: “MacRebur are excited to have some of the world’s top racers ride on our innovative asphalt product, made using 100% waste plastics, as they take part in stage six of the OVO Tour of Britain.
“This plastic road is one of many in Cumbria, and part of growing global list, that have been surfaced using MacRebur’s products.”
MacRebur are currently doing a second round of crowdfunding investment with Seeds to help finance their international expansion, with £1.2m raised in the last week alone. This year they have already laid roads in New Zealand, Australia, the Middle East, Turkey, Portugal and Slovakia and two of the directors, Gordon Reid and Toby McCartney, will travel to the US next week to lay their first American road in San Diego.
