Rain won't stop charity team

STORM Callum is battering the region today but a team of determined cyclists are still hoping to complete a charity cycle ride tomorrow.

Tomorrow 100 cyclists will join Lockerbie’s fab five – the Cycle to Syracuse team – while they cycle from ‘the Cairn to the Castle.’

Paul Rae, Brian Asher, Colin Dorrance, David Whalley and David Walpole — along with 100 others will cycle from Lockerbie Academy to Edinburgh Castle.

They will depart from the school grounds at 8.30 am, following in the wake of Lockerbie RBL Pipe Band.

However, a yellow warning for rain has now been put in place for tomorrow duration of the Cycle to Syracuse event over the southern end of the route.

But organisers have said that the event remains unchanged, subject to a risk assessment at 6 am.

An official statement from the team said: “Contingency plans have been discussed should the rain persist to a point where visibility and road surface conditions became unsafe on the open road – which would allow both the Lockerbie procession and Edinburgh processions to continue.

“Buses and vans will be used in this scenario to transport cyclists and equipment should the need arise.

“For now, all cyclists should be prepared for suitable wet weather clothing and ensure that front and rear lights are fitted and fully charged, for additional visibility if necessary.

“The vast majority of participating cyclists are highly experienced on the road in many conditions, and a pool of several motorbikes, vans and marked cars will all contribute to the safety arrangements – however safety will remain under constant review before and during the event.

“Look back and act forward seems like very pertinent advice at this stage.”

Behind the scenes on new Lockerbie drama

A NEW series based on parts of the Lockerbie Disaster is now showing on Sky this week. Featuring Colin Firth and Catherine McCormack, ‘A Search for Truth’ was inspired by the memoirs of Dr Jim Swire, who lost his daughter Flora in the 1988 tragedy. Filming took place in Scotland and Morocco in early 2024 and Annandale Herald editor Fiona Reid went on the set to meet the cast and crew and find out more about it.
