Annandale East and Eskdale member Archie Dryburgh was presented with a Special Contribution Award at the LGiU Scotland and CCLA Councillor Awards 2018.
He was nominated for his tireless work promoting the interests of the armed forces, developing a volunteer ethos and supporting the work of third sector organisations which contribute to the wellbeing of service personnel and veterans.
Reacting, Archie said: “It is very humbling to receive this award, especially as this was the inaugural awards for Scottish councillors.
“I could not do the job I do without the support of council officers, directors, and more importantly the community that is affected by the decisions made, whether that be armed forces, those that receive first aid training, or when I get support from Third Sector organisations such as Newstart Recycle.”
The inaugural awards ceremony, held at Edinburgh’s City Chambers last Thursday, is the only national ceremony to recognise and reward the efforts of councillors from across the political spectrum.
A total of eight awards were up for grabs this year in a range of categories, and Archie was presented with his award in front a large audience of colleagues and peers.
Archie added: “The MC suggested that, because of the amount of nominations for me, it was a no brainer to give the award for special contribution.
“I do not do this work to get recognised but because I believe that there is a benefit to the community or organisation I do it for, and because, put simply, it is the right thing to do.”
Speaking at the ceremony, LGiU chief executive Dr Jonathan Carr-West said: “It’s fantastic to hear stories of local councillors working selflessly for the community, bringing real benefits to residents.
“Councillor Dryburgh has demonstrated huge talent and dedication.”
