Lockerbie lass is Miss UK

MISS SCOTLAND Linzi McLelland has left the Miss World competition in China with a new title . . . Miss UK.

The former Lockerbie Academy pupil turned flight attendant spent a month in China competing and was thrilled to place in the top 12 out of 118 contestants from around the globe.

The 24-year-old was ranked the highest of all other UK competitors and the second highest European contestant, making her runner-up to the Miss Europe crown.

She said: “It was a very intense few days before the final and I was worried that I would not place at all. All of the finalists are beautiful, strong women – the competition was really tough.

“I am incredibly proud and grateful to have placed so well.

“I worked very hard over the last few months for this. I do think the preparation helped but I believe being myself from day one carried me through. I made the most of my time and had so much fun. I have met so many new friends and already have plans to catch up before Christmas.”

She added: “I have my family and friends to thank. They have been there for me so much recently and have always supported me.

“My mother, Lynn, has been my biggest fan and has always encouraged me to reach for the stars.”

Linzi is currently still in Sanya, China, having been asked to stay on to represent the Miss World brand at red carpet events.

She said: “Hopefully this is the start of more exciting journeys to come for me.”

But Linzi’s main focus will continue to be working with Suicide Awareness in memory of her late dad, Jim.

She said: “I plan to continue my work with Suicide Awareness and will be working with the St Andrew’s First Aid to undergo my mental health first aid training next month and I hope to use my knowledge to educate people in the community about how important mental health is.”
