Golden gong for butcher's bridie

AN ANNAN butchers is helping to keep haggis on the menu far beyond Burns Night after bringing home a trio of glittering honours from a national industry awards.

High Street butchers Dunnabie Farm Shop secured a Gold Award for their tasty haggis bridie at the Scottish Craft Butchers Haggis Products Awards 2019, marking them as being among the best of their type in Scotland.

The popular butchers also lifted two silver awards for their McMacaroni pie and their Bannockberg – a play on a Battenburg cake using Lorne sausage and haggis.

Delighted owner Jo Birtwistle said the award-winning bridies had come about “by accident” after haggis filling was used in a bridie case “just to see what it tasted like.”

She said: “The result was a huge hit with the customers, and they y off the shelves immediately when we cook them.”

And with 2019 being designated the Year of the Haggis, Jo is confident their award-winning products will prove popular throughout the whole year.

She said: “We’ll use this year to really push haggis products and introduce several new ideas every couple of months so that people can enjoy this delicious dish in a wide variety of ways.”

Dunnabie Farm Shop was one of 60 butchers from all over Scotland who submitted a wide variety of handcrafted products, which were judged blind in one of the industry’s most keenly contested awards.

Meanwhile, Dumfries butchers JB Houston also scooped a Gold Award for their pork and haggis baskets.

Scottish Craft Butchers chief executive Douglas Scott said: “Judges were impressed by just how novel some of the highly rated products were and they will, without a doubt, see haggis on the menu for many households throughout this entire year.

“These awards show customers just what a high standard their local butcher sets.”
