Lockerbie ROM role call

MARK Walker-Jones and Sam Howatson are over the moon to be this year’s Lockerbie Gala and ROM Cornet and Cornet’s Lass.

Mark, 19, is a learning assistant for Hutton and Lockerbie Primary, from near Waterbeck, a former Annan and Lockerbie Academy pupil,

will be the first in his family to hold the crucial role.

He said: ” I am the first member of my family to be a principal. Which I hope is the start of a family tradition.

“I’m excited to have this opportunity. People I went to Pony Club with have been inspiring Cornets and Lasses to me. So it means a lot that I am now getting this opportunity to inspire others.”

Lass Sam, 25, a trainee land agent, meanwhile, is following in the footsteps of many of her family members by helping lead the cavalcade in June.

She said: “It is a honour to be Lockerbie Cornet’s Lass, where I can follow in my families’ footsteps and be able to take part in a special tradition for the town.”

They will be joined by Standard Bearer Kate Anderson on the big day.

This year’s Gala Queen will be selected at a public vote next Friday, March 8
