Further return delay at crisis hit super school

PUPILS and staff at the crisis-hit North West Community Campus (NWCC) are facing an additional delay to their return.

Nursery and primary school pupils were set to return to the school later this month, but this has been delayed until April to allow for “additional cleaning”.

However, pupils from Langlands special school will return to NWCC on March 20 as planned.

The ‘super school’ opened in August last year but was closed just weeks later after a number of incidents sparked safety concerns.

Dumfries and Galloway Council has been working with contractors to carry out remedial works at the school but have already faced delays.

Work had originally been scheduled to be completed before the end of 2018, but further issues were discovered which delayed the opening until this spring.

Nursery and primary pupils will now return on April 1, one week later than previously planned.

A newsletter circulated to parents this week reads: “The contractor has now almost completed the works at NWCC to the satisfaction of the authority.

“We think the final sign off will be achieved as of Friday March 8, following a period of deep cleaning to reach standards expected by the council.

“This timescale allows for the move of the pupils at Langlands to progress as planned on March 20.

“It is now planned that the nursery and primary pupils will return to NWCC on April 1 2019. This is one week later than the provisional date which has been circulated, but reflects the requirement for additional cleaning.

“This period also allows a good planning and preparation time to ensure that the move is smooth for pupils and staff.”

The letter states that secondary pupils will return after the SQA exam period as previously planned.
