Business prize for construction boss

A LOCKERBIE businessman has been named the South of Scotland’s director of the year.

Ryan Brown, of Robinsons, was revealed as the winner of the small/medium business category at the Institute of Directors ceremony in Glasgow last week. He said: “Winning this award has been a great achievement for me. I was delighted to be shortlisted as a finalist in this category, especially with the calibre of nominees this year. The awards are a great initiative to promote business to the wider audience and provide a great opportunity to network with like-minded individuals. Winning this award is testament to the hard work of our entire team as I couldn’t have achieved this success without them and I would like to take the time to give a special thanks to my dad, Jim Brown, our chairman for all his support and encouragement.

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported us throughout the years to reach our goals and grow our business. I look forward to what the future holds with our ambitious expansion plans.”

The construction boss beat off some tough competition to make the regional shortlist and was up against fellow Annandale businessman Eddie Black, director of Eco-Genics at Creca.

The judges were looking for a business with outstanding initiative, boldness and imagination in enterprise, as well as sound management practices. Robinsons Scotland was founded by Ryan and his father in 2005 and 14 years later they have grown from one business to five with 116 employees. Alongside Robinsons, they have developed several other ventures, including CWP Concrete which has two factories.

A company spokeswoman said: “With exciting and ambitious expansion plans, the Browns aren’t slowing down anytime soon and are on track to reach new heights in the years to come. With an overall strategy for future development for Robinsons Scotland, their aim is to create a £30m a year turnover and expand their tonnage to 350 units per week, establishing further manufacturing opportunities in Lockerbie to support industry in the local area.”
