Exciting autumn

A SERIES of autumn events is expected to attract scores of visitors to Dumfries and Galloway.

Six major events and festivals will take place in September and October, showcasing harvest produce, seafood, literature, light shows, cycle racing and motor sport. They will be a chance for people from home and away to enjoy the food, drink, culture and countryside of the region in all its rich variety.

It starts with the Tour of Britain, which arrives in Kirkcudbright on September 7; the same weekend will be the Harvest Food Festival in Castle Douglas on September 7-8; next is Stranraer’s popular Oyster Festival, September 13-15; then on September 14 is the Galloway Hills Rally; and the month will finish with Wigtown Book Festival, starting September 27. In October, Kirkcudbright will host the Festival of Light “Illuminaire” from the 10-13. All the events are supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Major Festivals and Events Strategy 2018-21.

VisitScotland regional leadership director Paula Ward said: “Dumfries and Galloway’s rich and diverse portfolio of events, including Wigtown Book Festival, OVO Energy Tour of Britain and the Stranraer Oyster Festival, continue to play a crucial role in the country’s visitor economy. Not only do they generate both economic and social benefits for local communities, but further help to stimulate domestic tourism, as well as build on Scotland’s strong reputation as the perfect stage for events.”
