DUMFRIES was named the best large town in Scotland at the Beautiful Scotland Awards and scooped a gold medal.

And it wasn’t the only success for the region with Kirkconnel emerging as the best small village and New Luce crowned best wee village.

In addition, The Veterans Garden at the Crichton won the RHS Scotland Award for Overcoming Adversity.

Mark Jardine, of the People’s Project who coordinated the Dumfries entry, said the whole group is delighted and added: “We need to actively encourage members of the public to work collaboratively with the Council to improve the region for everybody and to make the region a more welcoming place for visitors.”
