Brexit post created at council

A BREXIT co-ordinator is going to be employed by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

The UK is expected to officially part ways with the EU on October 31 this year and next week a report on the councils Brexit planning will go before councillors at a meeting in Dumfries.
In preparation for next months Brexit date, a presentation covering the councils exit plan will be given on Thursday.
A report, co-compiled by the councils policy officer Andrew Reed and principal resilience officer Mark Thomson, reveals the local authority has created a UK Exiting the EU Group which consists of heads of service, policy officers and resilience and community safety officers.
The report reads: “The group meets weekly to consider and update the council’s planning assumptions and regularly review and update the assumptions as new information and guidance is published.
“Officers from Dumfries and Galloway Council continue to meet with community planning partners to discuss managing the impacts of the UK exit from the EU, in supporting our regions communities, and ensuring planning is co-ordinated,”
In August 1.6million was allocated by Scottish Government to local authorities to assist with Brexit preparations, with 50,000 allocated to Dumfries and Galloway.
This funding will assist with the creation of a Brexit co-ordinator, whose role will be to support managers in planning and undertaking actions to mitigate the impacts of the UK Exit from the EU.
Discussing the role, the official report said: “This initial financial support is welcomed; however the council will require further financial investments from both the UK and Scottish Governments following an exit without a deal.”
Meanwhile, the report also highlights funding streams to support EU citizens in applying for the EU Settlement Scheme.
And it reveals that the council have liasoned with Transport Scotland to discuss traffic management and contingency plans top cope with likely delays that may be experienced at the ports in Cairnryan.
