Shout out to young playwrights

A SCHEME has been launched locally to nurture tomorrow’s playwrights.

The Young Playwrights Programme, run in association with the Bunbury Banter Theatre Company and the Theatre Royal at Dumfries, offers the chance for a small group, aged between 16 and 25, to work with established writers and other creatives. It will allow them to develop their writing skills and create their own piece of theatre.

The project will involve regular group sessions and workshops and provide individual support. It will culminate in November 2020 with a closed-door performance for a specially invited theatre industry audience.

Bunbury Banter is an award-winning company based in the region which has a growing reputation for nurturing young people and for presenting high-quality, original theatre of every kind. The Young Playwrights Programme will provide opportunities to read plays and take part in trips to theatres and galleries.

Ali Anderson-Dyer, Bunbury Banter director, said: “We hope to inspire, nourish and develop young talent from Dumfries and Galloway by providing the chance to work with playwrights and others from all across the UK. We want to create a safe space for the young playwrights to explore their work, develop their skills and experience. What’s particularly exciting is that they will have a variety of people supporting them including playwrights, actors and dramaturgs.

“In doing this we hope to offer them a rounded picture of the way contemporary theatre is created. Having worked with new writing for over 15 years, I am passionate about this project. It can not only benefit the young people involved but perhaps help discover future playwrights who wouldn’t have been found without such a scheme.”

Anyone interested in being considered is invited to an informal meeting at the theatre on Tuesday evening at 6 pm.
