Kev Martin, of DW Martin & Co Ltd, unearthed the device at his yard in Creca on Saturday, finding it in the corner of a shed. But it was not until several days later that he called in the cops after his concerns grew.
He said: “I’ve found similar stuff before so wasn’t concerned. Then on Monday I had a good look at it again, the bottom was still on it, it was intact.” After releasing that it was an unexploded bomb and not an exploded relic, he rang 999.
Kev said: “After having a proper look, I just knew it wasn’t right.”
Police were drafted in before the bomb squad was called.
Commenting, a spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Police were called at around 2.45 pm after the discovery of an unexploded ordnance device found at a yard in the Chapelcross area on Monday. “Local police alerted the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team who destroyed the device at Redkirk beach in the early hours of Tuesday morning. A road closure was put in place to assist with the disposal.”
Sgt Scott McDowall added: “They safely carried out a controlled explosion on an old missile which was found buried in an area of land out there.
“Nothing suspicious, just an old remnant of one of the World Wars.”
