School move gets parents' backing

ARENTS of children at Loreburn Primary School have welcomed plans for a whole school move.

On Wednesday morning councillors at the Education Committee meeting agreed that plans be progressed to move the school to within the Minerva building on the Dumfries Academy site, if a bid to the Scottish Government National School Funding for alterations work is successful.

The move, which would be part of Dumfries Learning Town Phase Two, comes in response to concerns about the condition and suitability of the existing primary school building.

Welcoming the decision, Parent Council chairwoman Rachael Allen said: “We are very excited about the potential integration of Loreburn within the Dumfries Academy building. As much as the Loreburn school building is a big part of the history of Dumfries, it is the staff that make it the amazing school it is and I know they will continue to do so should the move take place.

“After the news that the conversion of the old art college into flats will be starting soon, it is a huge relief to know the local authorities have taken our worries about this and other things into consideration when deciding the future of our school.”

Echoing the delight, vice chair Heidi Wu also recognised the building’s history in the town. And she said: “We are thrilled with the news that the school will be relocating. “Loreburn is one of the oldest schools in the town with a lot of history. Unfortunately, over time, the building has become unfit for the modern day purposes of the school.”
