A FORMER bobby is getting in gear for a gruelling bike and hike challenge in honour of cancer-stricken loved ones.

Retired police officer Mickey Collins from Lochmaben will pull on his running shoes and his bicycle helmet for the unique Three Peaks Bike and Hike charity event.
Mickey said: “The event will involve an unsupported 500 mile cycle between Fort William in Scotland to Llanberis in Wales, via Wasdale Head in the Lake District, and will include individual hikes up and down the UK’s three highest peaks \_ Ben Nevis (4409 feet) Scaffel Pike (3209 ft) and Snowdon (3560 ft.)”
He is hoping to tackle the event between 13 and 20 June and feels in fine form for such a challenge after a cycle between Land’s End and John O’Groats last year.
Mickey explained that he is planning the trip to remember and honour friends and family who have been affected by cancer.
He will be joined at Ben Nevis and Snowdon by his 15 year old son Rory.
All money raised from his efforts will be donated to the Love Hope Strength Cancer Foundation.
The charity was set up and run by Welsh musician Mike Peters, of The Alarm, to promote music related outreach and awareness programmes for leukaemia and cancer sufferers, survivors and their families.
Funds are also used to purchase medical equipment and supplies and to raise awareness of and recruit potential donors to the organ and bone marrow registers.
