The weather may have been cold but it remained dry as Princess Anne and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon paid their respects to the 227 victims that perished in the crash.
A military parade then formed at the memorial cairn behind the Blacksmiths Shop before Councillor Craig Peacock, who is vice-chairman of the Gretna, Springfield and Eastriggs Commemoration Group, welcomed the crowds and an ecumenical service was led by Rev Bryan Haston and Rev Martin Callaghan.
The Quintinshill poem was then read at the Stormont Hall, a roll of honour was unveiled in Gretna Old Parish Church and a tree was planted at the war memorial.
Meanwhile, an act of remembrance, which included the Last Post, a one minute silence, three volleys and a wreath laying, was also held at Quintinshill Bridge.
