Tot’s mountainous effort for the NHS

A TODDLER and his mum have scaled Ben Nevis, in a manner of speaking, raising £590 for charity in the process.

Gemma Twinning and her 21-month-old son Ruairidh, as well as her new baby Aila completed 588 flights of their stairs at home near Closeburn. It came to 8810 steps in total, the equivalent of the Scottish peak.

All the money raised will go to the Association of NHS Charities.

Gemma is currently on maternity leave from her role as a nurse. She said: “Being unable to help out on the frontline, me and my little man thought we would have a go at raising money to help support the NHS and community during this awful pandemic.

“He is already an avid climber and has enough energy to put Sonic to shame. His little Scottish heart fancied the majestic Ben Nevis, being Highland born we thought this apt.”

On Monday she announced they had reached their destination and said: “Finally we reached the summit of Ben Nevis. Ruairidh has been a little star and loved every minute, especially the celebrations. “It took a little longer due to the hot weather and the loft being far too toasty, but we have finally completed it all and I am so, so proud of my little man and so thankful to all the lovely and amazing people that have donated money.

“To all my amazing NHS families, you are incredible and doing the greatest jobs.”
