Citizen of the year

A WOMAN who runs a food bank in Newton Stewart has been recognised for her community spirit.

Marlane Cash has been announced as Citizen of the Year 2020 by the Newton Stewart Rotary Club.

Described by one nominee as “an unsung hero who just gets on with doing what she feels led to do,” Marlane is best-known for her role as co-ordinator of Machars Churches Basics Bank.

Working with a team of volunteers to provide practical help to individuals and families in need by giving emergency food supplies and other essentials, the service is free, non-judgemental and confidential, and offers much-needed support within the community.

Passionate about making a real difference to people’s lives, Marlane is always willingly available to help with anything from filling in forms to delivering emergency food parcels.

Rotarians were in awe of her dedication to supporting others over a prolonged period of time and were delighted to recognise her hard work at a presentation outside The Bruce Hotel last week.

Club president Robert Boan said: “It was heart-warming to read the passionate nominations submitted for Citizen of the Year and a privilege to hear about many of those in the Machars area who are going above and beyond. Thank you to everyone who is supporting the current efforts to keep us safe through the pandemic, and to those who have been serving our community for a long time and remain committed to doing so. You make this a very special place to live.

“Marlane’s quiet, ongoing dedication to the people of Newton Stewart and the Machars is extraordinary and it was a pleasure to present her with the Citizen of the Year Award for 2020.”

  • Basics Bank welcomes donations of non-perishable food and household items, with drop off points across the area. Anyone who would like more information about giving or receiving support, can contact Marlane on 07884370419.
