Local curlers head up new event

A NEW prestige curling competition has been launched and two local faces have formed the organising committee.

Scott Hamilton and David Edwards, both Lockerbie, each have decades of curling experience under their belts and have represented Scotland across the globe in major events.
And now, along with six other experienced curlers, they have developed the British Players Curling Championships.

The event was announced this week and will take place between February 11 and 14.
Several teams have already signed up to play.
On the competition’s Facebook page, a spokesman said: “Don’t sit on the sidelines, get involved and register your teams’ interest.
Many thanks for the considerable interest shown in this new and exciting competition. “Particular thanks to those teams who have already registered their interest in supporting the event.
Clarification around the venue and more competition details will be posted in the coming days.”
It is being advertised as an ‘inclusive prestigious event for all’ with successful teams being offered cash prizes, proposal for the European Players Curling Championship and qualification for a provisional British Players Curling Tour.
The date of the competition clashes with the championship games of the Scottish Curling men’s and women’s championship, which will be held at Dumfries Ice Bowl for the first time.
The new event comes shortly after Scottish Curling announced changes to the Scottish championship, where winning no longer meant automatic progression to the World Championship but instead representatives would be selected
The change sparked anger from many in the curling circuit.
