Schools back full time next week

PUPILS in Dumfries and Galloway will go back to school full with no social distancing next Wednesday, the local council has confirmed.

On Tuesday Dumfries and Galloway Council director of education and learning Gillian Brydson wrote to parents to confirm that all pupils will go back to school on August 12.

Individual schools will have flexibility to make individual arrangements, especially for those in transition years.

And Lockerbie Primary School has already confirmed that P1 pupils will return in their phased groups next week before going back full time on August 17.

In her letter to parents Ms Brydson said: “Over the summer holidays, our teams have been working to prepare our schools and finalise arrangements so we that we are able to reopen our schools safely for everyone.

“The school day will look different for us all. New personal hygiene practices throughout the day, enhanced cleaning arrangements and complying with physical distancing for time in our classrooms will mean that we will have to adapt to new working practices.”

Pupils will not be required to socially distance within school grounds, but will be asked to clean their hands when entering the school building and at regular points throughout the school day.

Parents will not be allowed within school grounds, unless they are accompanying a P1 pupil attending school for the first time.

Additional school buses have been made available to assist with capacity issues, and all pupils will be asked to clean their hands before boarding school transport.

Some providers will also ask children to wear face coverings on board school buses.

And individual schools will make their own arrangements for providing school meals, although there will be no hot food option during the first few days of the school return.

Ms Brydson said all parents will receive an email with more information about the return to school to allow them to help prepare children for the different school day.

She continued: “All our staff are looking forward to our schools reopening so that we can welcome our pupils and young people back into our school communities and start learning again.”

Dumfries and Galloway Council has generated a list of answers to frequently asked questions about school reopening which can be found at www.supportdg.dumgal.gov.uk/article/21023/FAQ-s-Re-opening-of-schools.
