Locharbriggs Social Club, which opened in June 1978, made the decision to close as it is “no longer financially viable” to remain open following a meeting of the committee and two senior bar staff on Wednesday night.
The club, on Auchencrieff Road, will cease trading on Sunday, September 20 at 11 pm.
A spokesman for Locharbriggs Social Club said: “This is an extremely sad and emotional time for everyone who is, and has been, involved with the social club and a lot of friends and memories have been made along the way.
“Times and drinking cultures have changed and, unfortunately, they have not worked in our favour.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank members for their loyal support over the years.”
Following the shock announcement, hundreds of people flocked online to pay tribute to the club.
Sheila Adams said: “So sad to read this and sorry for the staff. Have had some brilliant times at the club over the years. Thanks to all the staff and committee for all their hard work. The end of an era.”
Stuart McNeil added: “So sad, on behalf of Langlands School Parent Council, I would like to thank you for your help and support with our race nights over the years.”
John Hardie commented: “Such a sad decision to have to make. It’s been a well-run club for many years, sadly the way things are going it won’t be the last in Dumfries and Galloway to have to shut the doors.”
Irene Irving added: “Oh that’s such sad news. What a loss to Locharbriggs.”
