AFTER taking a short break, Eastrigg’s favourite knitted window display has returned – promising new instalments for Halloween, bonfire night and a different Christmas themed display on each day of December.
When the country went into lockdown, Pam Mellor began to notice lots of rainbows appearing in windows around the village. Inspired by this message of hope, she decided to put on her own daily themed displays using her knitting initiative and whatever she could find around the house.
Hoping to keep local children off school entertained on their daily walks, she committed to presenting a new theme each day. Like many others, Pam didn’t expect schools to be shut for several months, but stuck by her word – and has now completed over 150 different displays.
Reflecting on some of her highlights, Pam said: “I went through the alphabet twice and then I asked my Facebook friends what on earth I could do, so they suggested Phileas Fogg and Around the World in 80 Days, so I did that which was quite good.
“We had the big things like VE Day, VJ Day, Easter, marking all the big days. Some days I was also making knitted flowers for folk to help themselves on the way past.”
Pam’s incredible and imaginative efforts have not gone unnoticed by the community, with a statement from Eastriggs, Dornock and Creca Community Group saying: “We understand our young people have been checking-in on the daily updates and following Phileas Fogg around the world recently.
“Thank you, Pam, for your community sprit and entertaining all members of our community.”
Having photographed all the displays, Pam now plans to compile an album of her collection for the village to look back on.
On her plans for the rest of 2020, she said: “I’m going to do it until the end of the year – and that’ll be me!”
