Ironically, the share-out of funds took place as the member-owned movement’s Butts Street store was being prepared for closure on Saturday June 13 — ending a long presence in the town and resulting in the loss of 42 jobs.
The town centre site has been sold to make way for a branch of the German-owned discount store Aldi.
Among the cheques was one raised through a second-hand book table in the branch.
The proceeds, £1178, were donated to the Glencaple – based Nith Inshore Rescue team, which covers a large area of the Solway.
Store manager Kevin Armstrong, pictured second from left, handed the cheque to Nith Rescue chairman Robbie Cowan, fourth from left, in front of one of the team’s two boats which was on display in the car park on Wednesday morning.
