British Transport Police have confirmed the death and said: “Officers were called to Closeburn station at 11.54 am this morning (2 November) following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family.”
The spokeswoman confirmed the incident is not being treated as suspicious and said a file will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal.
Meanwhile, ScotRail this afternoon tweeted the following: “Sadly, a person has been struck by a train between New Cumnock and Dumfries. We’ve had to close the line while we work with the emergency services.”
The line has now reopened.
