A ROYAL Marine from Dumfries will take part in a 24-hour marathon fun run up the Grampian Mountains next month alongside members of his fleet.
Chris Gilbert is one of six members of the 43 Commando taking on the mammoth challenge in memory of fellow marine Major Chris Moses RM who died last year.
On March 12 the ‘Moses Mountain Marathon’ will see his comrades honour the legacy he left behind by each running a total of 26 miles from their naval base to the top of Beinn a’ Mhanaich.
Set up as a relay, two people will be always running, with each of the three pairs of runners undertaking two 13-mile legs over the 24 hour period.
Chris said: “In the marines your training, exercising and way of life is orientated around these kinds of arduous and stressful conditions, so it’s nothing really out of the ordinary, but this is more structured in a sense.
“I’m in the third pair so from the point of the first pair going it’ll be eight hours until I start running.”
Chris added he is looking forward the challenge, which he says is “nothing out of my realm”.
