Search for missing pensioner continues

POLICE and coastguard teams continue to search for a pensioner from Kirkcudbright last seen on Friday (March 12).

Concerns are growing for Joyce Kirkland, 72, who suffers with mobility problems.

She was last seen at a property on Buchanan Street, Kirkcudbright shortly before midnight on Friday and was reported missing early the next morning.

Joyce is described as around 5ft 6in tall, medium build with grey shoulder length hair.

Search teams initially focused on the area around Kirkcudbright Harbour and has now extended to Rough Island including both banks of the River Dee.

Stewart Bryden, senior coastguard operations officer at Kirkcudbright said: “We are still carrying out local knowledge patrols within the area

“We are concentrating on hotspots where we may think Joyce is.

“The Marine and Coastguard Agency has made local fishermen and yachtspeople aware that she is missing.

“We have been unable to trace her so far.”

Stewart added it has been a particularly difficult for the crew as they know Joyce.

Sergeant Frank Parker, based at Castle Douglas, said: “We are concerned for Joyce’s welfare.

“She has limited mobility issues due to problems with her knees so this may be noticeable as she would have to take regular rests when walking.

“Her family are extremely concerned, she has not been reported missing before and we are appealing for anyone who has seen Joyce to contact us.”

Chief Inspector Bryan Lee, Local Area Commander, said: “Joyce’s family have been kept fully informed with our enquiries and we remain very concerned for Joyce’s welfare.

“We know the local community have supported our search efforts and we are thankful to them, and our partners, for assisting with the investigation.

“We believe Joyce left the address on foot and could have walked to the harbour area. Despite the early hours of the morning I’d urge anyone who may have seen Joyce out walking, or who may have seen her since, to get in touch so we can understand her movements.

“I’d urge anyone with private CCTV covering the route Joyce may have taken, to check their systems and provide any relevant footage to officers as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident number 0645 of 13 March 2021.
