Fitness first for mums

A NEW outdoor exercise class has proved a hit with Lockerbie mums.

It was started earlier this month by health conscious first time mum Pam Lewis, who has recently moved back to the area to raise her family.

After leaving school and university, Pam – pictured- has forged a career with BP as a project engineer and lived in Aberdeen.

But in November she and her husband, Mark, moved to Bankshill with Eva, now seven months, and Pam was keen to make the most of her maternity leave during a global pandemic – by getting together with other mums and creating a way to meet face-to-face.

She said: “I wanted to meet other local mums and I looked into what sport and fitness classes were available for mum and baby for two reasons – one, I love sport and keeping fit; and two, because it is one of the things that is permitted with the covid restrictions.

“And I really wanted Eva to meet other babies which isn’t something that has been easy to do because of covid, and I haven’t met anybody through local NCT groups for example.

“I am lucky in that I did have a couple of mum friends in the local area and I ran the idea of starting up a mum’s fitness group in McJerrow Park with them.

“They were really encouraging and supportive so I advertised the idea on a few local Facebook groups.”

The first class took place last week and was well supported – easily achieving the maximum class size of 15. This week’s class was also fully booked.

And Pam said: “Everyone has been very positive and I really appreciate the support.

“It’s great to get out and see other mums and their babies and toddlers.

“One mum brings her double buggy and has been pushing two little ones around the park.

“We do a mixture of running and bodyweight based exercises for 45 minutes, with options to tailor to everyone’s fitness and energy levels – I have to remember some attendees may not have had that much sleep!

“I think everyone is just glad of something local that anyone of any ability can attend and it’s getting easier now the days are warming up.”
