Moffat road flooding discussed

FLOODING on Moffat’s roads was a hot topic at this week’s community council meeting.

Increased disruption along The Holm and Jeff Brown Drive due to heavy rainfall was raised by members on Tuesday night.

Chairman Leys Geddes said he was told recently by ex chair Dick Monaghan that the floods are a result of “a failure of the council to clean the drains effectively”.

The claims were echoed by treasurer David Booth, who said gully drains along The Holm are “full to the brim of debris”.

He added: “The gullies need to be cleaned out, there’s no question about that, because the water does eventually get away so the drain must be alright – it’s the stuff that’s stopping the water getting down the drains that’s the problem.”

Responding, Cllr Stephen Thompson admitted the council “could have done better in the past in terms of how it’s maintained its drains”.

He added: “I know that recent works to Old Edinburgh Road and Well Road in Moffat have made a massive difference after a lot of complaints from local residents, and clearly once the work’s done it’s made improvements.

“But I think the level of maintenance required, the council has tended to have a very reactive approach and there is a kind of list of actions that the council should be looking to do as part of its maintenance, and I think that’s in the flood action plan which will be available somewhere.”
