NINE people were taken to hospital following two separate pile ups on the A74(M) near Moffat last Friday (March 26).

The collisions occurred just eight miles and two and a half hours apart, with police being called to the first near junction 16 at Johnstonebridge at around 2.10 pm.

The initial crash involved eight vehicles and resulted in seven people being taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, some with serious injuries.

Shortly after 4.30 pm the northbound carriageway was being re-opened when emergency services received reports of a second incident involving four vehicles at junction 15 southbound, less than a ten minute drive away.

A further three people sustained minor injuries, two of whom were taken to hospital.

The southbound carriageway was partially blocked and re-opened around 6.15 pm.
