4200 trees given away by charity
Carrifran Wildwood’s ‘The Survivor' was named Scotland's tree of the year in 2020

AN ENVIRONMENTAL charity has celebrated a quarter-century of tree planting and conservation in the region.

And to mark 25 years since it launched, the Borders Forest Trust has given-away thousands of trees to people across Dumfries and Galloway to plant locally.

Funded by Scottish Forestry, the ‘Big Tree Giveaway’ saw over 200 applicants receive 4200 native broadleaf trees which included oak, birch, hazel and crab apple.

Furthermore, the trust ensured rowan trees were for the offering as well, having had one of their own, Carrifran Wildwood’s ‘The Survivor’, crowned as Scotland’s tree of the year last year.

Among those who took advantage of the scheme were community woodland groups, community projects, schools, and volunteer groups who involved members from their local area in planting the trees.

Furthermore, many were planted by young people who will be able to watch the trees grow in years to come.
