Dolls get expert coaching

AN INTERNATIONAL roller derby star has been passing on advice to a Dumfries team.

Stefanie Mainey held an intensive boot camp at the David Keswick Centre in the town, and put the Doonhame Derby Dolls through their paces.
Doonhame Derby Dolls coach Cat Walker said: “It was a real coup to get Stefanie to Dumfries, as she travels around the world both competing and training other teams.
“Her experience of playing for the London Roller Girls and Team England mean she is constantly in demand.”
Cat added: “We got a huge amount out of the day, and it set us up well for a demonstration day we had the next day for friends and family.”
Funded by the Voluntary Action Fund, local company Sleeping Giants organised the all-day event which combined off-skate and on-skate activities with healthy eating and lots of hints and tips for building core strength and agility.
Roller derby is a full contact extreme sport played on roller skates that is experiencing a huge surge in popularity in the UK.
The Dolls were founded 18 months ago to bring the exciting sport to women in the region.
The Dolls plan to start bouting soon, and are keen to encourage new skaters to join them either as a skater, an official or a volunteer.
