Health bosses say they are for early diagnosis of the disease.
A spokesman said: “They have been established as a care pathway that enables clinicians to refer patients to this facility in complex instances where there is a suspicion of cancer but symptoms do not wholly meet the criteria within the Scottish Referral Guidelines for Suspected Cancer.
“Where they do, those patients will continue to be referred to the appropriate dedicated services at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.”
South Scotland MSP Emma Harper welcomed the development and said: “I was pleased to hear that the Scottish Government have hit the ground running and have already opened the first of three new fast track cancer diagnostic centres here in Dumfries and Galloway.
“This was a commitment in the SNP manifesto and the fact that it has opened in the first three weeks of government is testament to the Scottish Government’s commitment to implementing both its manifesto here in South Scotland and indeed nationally.
“This new centre will be vital in ensuring people across our region have quick referrals for cancer diagnoses and in ensuring people receive treatment quickly, which is vital in the successful treatment of cancer.
“I will continue to monitor the progress of this work and I will work to ensure other manifesto commitments – including to our transport infrastructure, natural environment and education – are progressed at pace.”
