THE NUMBER of furloughed workers in the region dropped significantly in April, HMRC has revealed.
In the month that saw many sectors such as hospitality and retail reopen and welcome back staff, a total 6000 claims were made through the UK Government’s job retention scheme – which is 1800 fewer than in March.
The majority of recipients – 3700 – were female, whilst the remain- ing 2300 were male.
The figures follow a downward trend in the number of furloughed employments in Dumfries and Galloway since the start of the year as coronavirus restrictions have eased steadily.
The scheme’s local take-up rate also dropped from 13 per cent to 10 per cent between March and the end of April.
