Cash splash for wild swimmers

A WILD swimming group from Moffat has been given funds to purchase new equipment.

And it is hoped that the microgrant awarded by Moffat Community Council will make way for more people to get involved with open water swimming locally.

The cohort first took the plunge earlier this year as lockdown restrictions eased and has since grown to 30 active members, who meet twice a week at Loch of the Lowes and the neighbouring St Mary’s Loch for a dip.

So far, the new funds have bought two pairs of neoprene gloves and two pairs of neoprene socks, which are specially designed for open-water swimming. In addition, two tow floats and two wetsuits have been purchased using the money.

Appealing for more people to get involved with Moffat Wild Swimming Group, organiser Nicola Wardhaugh said: “Swimmers of all abilities are welcome. Some people have a quick dip without straying too far from the shore, some enjoy a chat while doing breaststroke and others do the crawl a bit further out. It’s a friendly and supportive group.

“Bringing a warm drink and a biscuit to enjoy afterwards is encouraged not only for social reasons but also to watch out for any signs of hypothermia.”

To get involved, join Wild Swimming and SUP Moffat Facebook page or email Nicola [email protected].
