MOFFAT and District Community Council (MDCC) has doubled its membership following an election to recruit more volunteers.
The group will welcome six new councillors from next month – brining the total to 12.
The new members joining are Tom Booth, Sasha Carlyle, Alan Davidson, Jim Hughes, Liam O’Neill and Bob Smith.
In a statement, MDCC chairman Leys Geddes said : “We are delighted to have so many new members joining the Community Council. We were 6, but are now 12. Credit for this goes to Fiona Murray who has revolutionised our communications by simply telling the community what we are doing, explaining why it’s important and encouraging new people to help us in our work. Moffat should be grateful to her because, with 12 Councillors, we will be able to do more.
“The job of a community council is to represent a community’s opinions and needs to the local authority and other public bodies. However, this can be difficult, because representing opinions and getting things done are not the same thing.
“For example, Dumfries and Galloway Council often struggle to satisfy our requests for better road surfaces, improved traffic controls, more support for Station Park and many other day-to-day priorities. So, increasingly, we will need to look after ourselves. That’s not easy in today’s world, especially during a pandemic, when things are uncertain, the money supply is tight and so much reliance is put on volunteers.
“Many will remember Moffat as the undisputed jewel in the crown of Southern Scotland, and our aim must be to reclaim that title. If everyone in the community felt they could spend some time on the Community Council, we would be stronger for it.”
