The haul includes nearly 440 tonnes of mixed plastic and tin cans, and over 750 tonnes of mixed paper and cardboard, all of which has been sent for recycling contributing to the region’s ambition to achieve net zero carbon status by 2025.
Officials at Dumfries and Galloway Council are delighted with the figures and Councillor Andy Ferguson, pictured above left, said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to all the people of Dumfries and Galloway for embracing the kerbside recycling service. While there are significant challenges in rolling out a region-wide service like this, we’ve managed to overcome many of these and we’re now delighted with the level of participation and the high volume of recyclable waste collected to date.”
Preparation is now underway to launch a new food waste recycling service in Annan, Dalbeattie, Dumfries, Gretna and Lockerbie from September. Details on this service will be sent to homes in these areas early next month followed by the delivery of two small plastic food caddies, one for internal use and the other for external use, with compostable liners provided.
