Project is helping boys become men

A GROUP of students at Lockerbie Academy are taking part in a groundbreaking pilot mentoring programme.

The Boys to Men initiative encourages young men to become role models in the community and challenge the stereotype of what it means to be a man in society today. They get space to discuss their feelings and learn how to support each other. The boys, who are in S4, will then become mentors for others.

Learning new skills is also key and they took part in a blacksmith workshop last Friday.

The school is working on the scheme with the University of the West of Scotland and teacher Lesley Aird said: “The project has had great support locally and nationally from men willing to share their life stories and skills with the boys. We are also getting lots of interest from other schools who are considering running the programme we are developing.”

Pupil Liam Tomkinson said: “I’ve enjoyed the mentoring programme and learned lots. I’m looking forward to helping others in our school community.”
