“I’M back!” That’s the message from Queen of the South striker Ally Roy.
The 24-year-old netted a late second for the Doonhamers in their 2-0 SPFL Trust Trophy quarter final against his old side Partick Thistle last week after spending the last six weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.
Goal machine Roy has now scored eight times in nine Queens appearances and admits it’s was pleasing he was the one to dump the Jags out of the cup.
Roy said: “First of all it’s great to be back involved and it’s good to get back on the scoresheet.
“It has been frustrating being out injured especially after having such a good start to the season personally. I’m just happy to be back involved and I couldn’t have topped it off in a better way.
“It was bittersweet too after the game against Partick in the league. They are one of my former clubs and their supporters had a fair share of choice words during that game so it was good to get them back with that goal.
“During the Hamilton game I did my hamstring. I felt it at the start of the match and I couldn’t run it off, luckily it wasn’t a very serious injury. I’ve trained the last few weeks and that’s me back fit now and hopefully I can get back in the team and do what I love to do, putting the ball in the back of the net.”
Roy also praised his teammates and fellow goalscorer Lee Connelly. The attacker struck with a sensational shot from 35 yards to give the Allan Johnston’s men the lead last week. It was Connelly’s fifth goal in six matches.
Roy added: “The wee man [Lee] has been on fire. Everyone saw his goal against Partick, it was different class. He’s got that in him to be fair. I’m happy to see him getting his fair share of goals.
“As long as someone is scoring and the team is getting the win that’s all that matters. Who knows what can happen in the Challenge Cup this time round.
“Not everyone can win a trophy or get a winners medal around their neck. To get that opportunity you need to grab it when it’s there.”
Next up for Roy and Queens is a trip to Somerset Park to take on Ayr United on Saturday. And the striker believes the Doonhamers can make it three victories on the bounce.
He said: “Every game in the league is tough there’s no easy games at all. First of all go and show that we are willing to fight to get the chance if that comes whoever is on the park can take their chances, get three points and get a wee run going.
“The mood has always been good in the squad. We’ve got a good bunch of boys and everyone gets on well. There’s no bad eggs and everyone is humble and wants to work with each other. That’s what you need in this league if you want to get success. Everyone has to be together and fight for the guys beside you. If we can all do that, the points will come.”
