Family’s fundraiser for ‘amazing’ hospital staff

A FAMILY from Annandale have launched a fundraiser to thank staff at the children’s ward at Dumfries who helped their poorly six week old baby.

Wee Lily Green was admitted to hospital last week with RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) and bronchiolitis.

Her worried mum and dad, Nicola and Chris Green, who live in Annan, have described it as “the most horrendous week of our lives”.

They have now got their little girl home and want to repay the infirmary team who treated her, so have launched a raffle and crowdfunding page.

Nicola said: “We want to be able to give back to the amazing doctors, nurses and specialists in the Children’s Ward at DGRI.

“To say this has been the hardest week for us would be an understatement.

“We are really wanting to help them out in any way we can and with the ward being so busy with ill children, the nurses and doctors have all said that it’s already been twice as bad as normal and they expect it to become worse.”

The drama started when six-week-old Lily developed a wheeze and was sent to hospital to be assessed.

“From there in it all got worse,” said Nicola. “The nurses and doctors put her on oxygen, gave her saline drops, helped her with Calpol and did swabs to test for various things.

“Her results came back and she had RSV that had then gone on to develop into bronchiolitis. She then started to get worse and was put on Opiflow – a special high flow humidified warmed oxygen system and put in an isolation room where staff, nurses and doctors all had to wear extra PPE before coming in to do their checks.”

The tot was put on a drip for fluids and then placed on Cpap, a pressure support system.

Reliving the dreadful time, Nicola said: “That’s when we were told that if she didn’t improve we would be taken to intensive care in Glasgow.

“Luckily for Lily, through the hard work, help, support and quick thinking from the staff at the hospital, she started to improve and we didn’t have to make that dreadful trip.”

“We are so grateful for everything the staff did for Lily; even though they are understaffed and overworked and every room in the children’s ward was occupied, they managed to make Lily better.”

The baby is still congested and has a lingering cough but they hope she won’t need any more treatment.

Meanwhile, Nicola, who is a rep for Usborne Books, has set up a rolling raffle, with all proceeds going to the ward.

A range of prizes have been donated by local businesses, including beauty treats, cakes, food, vouchers and more.

Anyone wishing to take part should go to her Facebook page, Nics Little Books for BIG Imaginations In Partnership with Usborne, by November 13.

Donations can also be made at the family’s dedicated Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/DGRIChildrensWard
