A PLAN to repurpose an old telephone box as a local information hub for Moffat High Street is to go ahead after receiving Government funding.
The project, being spearheaded by Moffat and District Community Council (MDCC), will see one of the classic red boxes transformed into a “digital hub point”.
A large touch screen will be installed inside linked to the VisitMoffat website so visitors can easily explore what the town has to offer.
Once ready, it will be sited outside Moffat Town Hall.
The phone booth was rescued by the community council after BT removed it from Park Circle four years ago.
Following an application to the Government’s Scotland Loves Local fund, it was announced this week the group will receive £5000 toward the project.
Furthermore, Dumfries and Galloway Council has agreed to match fund the application – meaning £10,000 will be available to spend.
MDCC’s grant application states: “The phone box will act as a gateway for people to explore the local area, giving useful information and encouraging them to stay longer – and hopefully to return.
“It would be fitted with a digital timer lock mechanism which would enable the phone box to be used during specified hours and prevent vandalism at night. It would be well lit and be seen as a bright, attractive feature on the High Street.”
