Cyclist Peter Smith, 51, has set himself a Lap the Planet Challenge and is aiming to smash the current record for cycling around the globe.
He said: “Lap the Planet has been a long time in the planning. As well as the physical and mental aspects, there are also huge logistical and technical challenges.
“I have a great team behind me and our intention is to set a new Guinness record for cycling around the world and, if all goes to plan, to become the first cyclist to ever lap the planet in less than 100 days.”
He added: “I am delighted to be starting and finishing in Dumfries. This is where I have chosen to live and raise my family.
“I am hoping local people will get right behind me and spur me on.”
His Grand Depart will be from the Midsteeple on July 25 and Peter said: “Once the clock starts ticking it doesn’t stop until I get back to the Midsteeple. I can’t wait to get started.”
He needs to raise money to cover costs from insurance to visas, to flights and food, and is looking for supporters to pitch in as much as $40,000 to help fund himself and his team of three supporters.
It has already cost him $28,000 of his own money for training and he will be adding more.
Peter said: “If you want to do something you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.
“I want to inspire people to find their own way to their own dreams.”
