High Street clean up plea

SOMETHING needs to be done to improve Lockerbie’s “grubby and dirty” High Street.

That’s the view of community councillor Karen Agnew after she highlighted the absence of an allocated street cleaner for Lockerbie.

And she believes a simple street clean is the answer.

Mrs Agnew – who is the group’s environmental issues officer – said: “Is there an allocated street cleaner in Lockerbie now? What is happening?

“Somebody is just emptying the bins but nobody is picking anything up on the street. It’s disgusting.

“I go litter picking around the town but we shouldn’t need to tidy the high street.

“I don’t know what people who visit Lockerbie will think when they see our bins full all the time and litter everywhere.

“It’s just grubby and dirty. A simple clean up is a basic for the town.”

Chairwoman Jan Andrews agreed there has been a “noticeable” difference and said a street clean is deeply needed.

She added: “We’ve got a high school here and young people go to into the town centre for their lunch and breaks.

“There’s always been complaints about litter as there wasn’t enough bins provided.”

Annandale North councillor Stephen Thompson stated it was a “recruitment issue” but he would look into the matter further for the next meeting.
