More Claires needed to help grow rugby

RUGBY enthusiasts are being sought to take up ambassadorial roles.

Stewartry Rugby Club’s Claire Manson, pictured, was last year appointed young ambassador for her work improving the opportunities available for female rugby players in the region.

She is now helping to get more young people into club boardrooms and improve diversity and representation in rugby.

The 24-year-old is captain of the club’s ladies Section and head coach for the girls section and is keen on growing the game and improving the opportunities available for female players in the local area.

Funding from the RugbyForce scheme contributed towards a scholarship fund for young players whose family may struggle to afford club membership fees, as well as the set-up of a kit donation scheme which will provide essential items for rugby such as boots for those in need.

In partnership with Scottish Rugby, the Royal Bank are encouraging other ambitious 18-35-year-olds across the country to become ‘Young Ambassadors’ like Claire.

They are looking for people who will tackle the issues facing amateur clubs and their local communities to support the future of Scottish rugby on and off the pitch.

There are 15 places for young grassroots leaders who will take on responsible committee positions at their clubs, as well as receive specialist training and mentoring to develop their management skills.

Winners will be selected from all five Scottish Rugby regions, with the successful candidates being announced in July

Applications have also opened for grants from the Rugbyforce fund.

More information on that and Young Ambassador nominations can be found at www.scottishrugby.org/clubs-and-schools/support-for-clubs/rugbyforce.
