Police crackdown on store bother

POLICE patrols are being stepped up at an Annan supermarket in the wake of escalating antisocial behaviour.

In recent weeks there have been ongoing reports of teens congregating at Tesco in the town, hassling staff and customers and stealing items.

In addition, staff are believed to have been wearing bodycams on occasion.

In response, Police Scotland officers met with staff at the store last week to see what can be done to resolve the issues, from both perspectives.

And Sergeant Scott McDowall said: “We’re obviously now fully aware of the anti social behaviour, and other issues there, albeit there’s not been a great deal reported to us.

“I have encouraged Tesco management to report any incident.”

He also said he believes Tesco are looking to employ additional security to shore up their defences.

Sgt McDowall added: “From a police point of view, I have stepped up patrols here and will deal with any incident occurring there appropriately.”

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Tesco’s head office was unable to detail the incidents.

But he said: “The safety of our customers and colleagues remains our number one priority, and we keep safety under constant review.”

He added that if there were any isolated incidents of anti-social behaviour, Tesco would work closely with Police Scotland.
