Town comes up trumps for MND charities

A MASSIVE fundraising effort is underway in Moffat, with the whole community getting behind Hugo’s and motor neurone disease charities.

Since January, the Hughes family, owners of the tapas bar and restaurant, and the local community have together raised almost £25,000, which will be split between the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, MND Scotland and The Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal.

The push to support the MND charities came after Moffat stalwart Jim Hughes was diagnosed with the condition in December.

His daughter Sasha said: “Since my dad, Jim, was diagnosed with MND, we’ve been doing all sorts of fundraising but the big one was our Scottish night on Saturday.

“Between ticket sales, auction and raffles, we raised £20,167.88.

“This will be divided and given to MND Scotland, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and The Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal

“Our total to date is just short of £25,000.”

In addition, local lass Lenny Borthwick has braved the shave not just once but twice for the good cause.

Back in January, Lenny vowed to shave off her long hair if people were generous enough to support her in raising funds for MND Scotland.

After smashing her initial £500 target, the first cut happened, but Lenny soon set her sights on the £1000 mark and a second buzz cut.

However, Lenny eventually managed to raise a whopping £3170 and on Saturday a local hairdresser from Mava took the clippers to her head once again, in front of a packed crowd – see above.

And the charity push continues with the next fundraiser to be on Friday May 20, when The Moffat Rams will take on Moffat Thistle for a game of football and rugby.
