What do you eat and why?

ALL Dumfriesshire adults are invited to take part in an online survey to help researchers better understand what adults in the UK are currently eating.

UK diets have undergone immense change over recent years, with many new food products available – from plant milks to vegan cheese. And this is making it challenging for health researchers to understand how certain diets may affect our health.

Dr Keren Papier, University of Oxford, explained: “Studies have shown, for instance, that plant-based diets are associated with a lower risk of heart disease. But these diets can be interpreted very differently in real life; some vegetarians and vegans may eat many nutritious foods such as wholegrains, fruits, vegetables, and pulses, whilst others may eat only white pasta, tomato sauce, white bread, and crisps.”

To address this, Dr Papier and her colleagues have launched a new study called Feeding the Future, which aims to generate an up-to-date picture of what UK adults following different diets are actually eating. The researchers are asking everyone to complete a short, one-off survey about the foods they eat, and why.

Dr Papier added: “For the data to be representative, we need as many people as possible to take part. Whether you are a committed carnivore, vegan, vegetarian or flexitarian – we want to hear from you!”

The survey is open to all UK adults over 18 years old and can be found at https://oxford.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/feeding-the-future-study-feed. It will run until at least the end of June 2022.
