Farms ready to open up

FOUR farms in the region are taking part in the annual Open Farm Sunday event tomorrow.

They will throw open their gates to the public on Sunday from 10 am to 3 pm.

Visitors to Errolston Farm at Gretna will be able to see their cows getting milked by robotic milking machines and enjoy a series of walks.

In contrast, Low Auldgirth Farm at Auldgirth is a regenerative smallholding. They will be demonstrating how they work with nature to produce top quality farm produce in a way that enhances the environment. Throughout the day there will be guided farm tours, wool working demonstrations as well as the opportunity to meet the animals and spot some of the iconic wildlife species.

Balmangan Farm near Borgue is a 330 acre regenerative livestock farm with native breed cattle, including Highland Cattle and belted Galloway Cattle, sheep and Tamworth pigs. Visitors can explore the farm trail, jump on a trailer tour, see the animals and hear about the rewilding plans and regenerative farming going on.

There will also be fundraising for MacMillan Cancer Support on the day.

The final participating venue is Ernespie Farm near Castle Douglas, which is offering a ‘no holds barred’ look at daily life to see how milk is produced on a commercial dairy farm. They currently milk 300 cows, supplying milk on a Morrisons contract through the farmer-owned co-op, Arla.

There will be lots of fun activities including tractor rides, welly throwing, tractor pull, machinery demonstrations and a chance to see the cows being milked and get up close and personal with the animals.
