Travel firm shuts Dumfries store

A TRAVEL agency store in Dumfries has closed its doors.

The branch of Barrhead Travel in the Loreburn Centre yesterday (Thurs) shut for good.

The firm is moving to a model in which a team of ‘travel experts’ work remotely in the local area to help holidaymakers plan trips.

They declined to say if there had been any job losses as a result of the store closure.

Commenting on the decision, a spokesperson from Barrhead Travel said: “Our retail store in Dumfries will be closing at the end of June. The town has been our home for many years, and we have had incredible support from the community.

“We have a regional team working remotely who will continue to support Dumfries holidaymakers with their future travel plans. We look forward to helping local customers plan their holidays for many years to come.”

Some customers received an email earlier this week informing them of the decision and reassuring them that their holidays will be unaffected by the move. They were also redirected to a new Dumfries email contact or the nearest Barrhead branch in Irvine.

Conversely, as news broke of the closure, Barrhead Travel this week was promoting a ‘Book Human’ message to encourage people to consider booking through a travel agent rather than online.

Launching the campaign, president Jacqueline Dobson said: “Since the pandemic we have noticed a dramatic spike in people booking via travel agents since travelling has resumed.

“After years of uncertainty, our Book Human ethos provides customers with the comfort in knowing their holiday is safe and that any additional questions they may have will be answered.”
