Donald Millar, of Trailflat Farm, Lochmaben, is the new Scottish Grassland Society champion after winning the Southwest of Scotland title. He went forward as a finalist in the Scottish Regional silage competition, to compete against the winners of the two other Scottish Grassland Societies competitions, East of Scotland, and North of Scotland.
Donald farms in conjunction with his parents Keith and Irene and their farm consists of 250 acres, of which 180 is made into silage. He milks 300 Holstein cows with a with a herd average of 12,560 litres of milk and a milk quality of 4.22 per cent butterfat and a protein of 3.28 per cent.
Although the judging was based on total farm performance, the quality of his silage was, DM: 35.6%, ME 12.2, Crude Protein 18.5%, and a DV: of 76.1.
